My Journey: Football to Bobsleigh, and Back Again

After being released in 2019 from the Saskatchewan Roughriders following a Training Camp injury, I returned to Ottawa to receive treatment. I knew that I wanted to continue training and competing, but I was 25 years old and had no remaining eligibility for USPORTS football. My Strength and Conditioning coach at Carleton University was Nick Westcott and after a lengthy discussion about my athletic future, he connected me with Bobsleigh Canada.

By the time I re-signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Week 5 of the 2019 CFL season, I had already attended my first training weekend with Ontario Bobsleigh.

I returned to Saskatchewan where I played for the remainder of the 2019 season, which was an amazing experience for myself and my family. The fans, coaches, and city of Regina welcomed me to the city.

After the cancellation of the 2020 CFL season, I flew to Calgary where I was named to the National Bobsleigh Team, and my career with them began in earnest.

    An unbelievable feeling!

The team travelled to Königssee, Germany for the brief period between the end of the World Cup season and the beginning of the Beijing Olympics!

Just over 3 weeks in the Yanqing Athlete Village. It housed athlete, coaches, and staff from all over the world for bobsleigh, skeleton, luge, and alpine skiing.

The Opening Ceremony was an incredible experience. The Canadian athletes from our village met outside in our full lulu gear to take a team pic with the Rings around 3:30pm, and from that point until walking out onto the stadium floor at the Bird Next Stadium

    &
    2022-23 Bobsleigh Season

Within a month of returning home from Beijing I had my first of two shoulder surgeries that would keep me off the field and ice for most of a year.

I returned to Carleton University for the Fall and Winter semesters to finish of my degree in Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering. I began at Carleton in 2016 and finished in the spring of 2023 – 7 years!

  • 2023 CFL Season

I trained for the entire spring and summer of ’23 with the hopes of getting a phone call which didn’t come until the final week of the regular season.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats signed me in October and I played one regular season game and one playoff game before our elimination in playoffs.

  • 2023-24 Bobsleigh Season

At the beginning of this season I decided to transition from being a brakeman to being the pilot.

There was slight overlap between the start of the bobsleigh season and the end of the football season. Before the call to Hamilton, I had begun learning to drive a bobsled in Whistler with the National Team. I then had to pack my bags, fly to Hamilton, and totally flip my brain from one sport to the other.

Within 5 days of elimination from the CFL playoffs I had arrived in Lake Placid to join the Canadian Bobsleigh Team and continue my development as a pilot.

  • 2024-25 Bobsleigh Season

My first full season as a pilot!

The 2024-25 season was my first full competitive season as a pilot. The year before I was mostly only competing in 2man, and only some of the races in North America, but this season had a full NAC (North American Cup) tour, my first World Cup race, and my first World Championship race!

Thanks to my crew for sticking out the highs and lows (the right-side-ups and right-side-downs) of a bobsleigh season!
